For our 25th anniversary, we’re honoured to present Tzeli Hadjidimitriou’s brilliant, multi award-winning documentary, “Lesvia.”
A profound celebration of community and change, “Lesvia” has achieved remarkable success since its 2024 world premiere at the BFI in London, earning countless awards and accolades. Though it has travelled globally, there’s no more poignant & perfect setting to experience this film than our fabulous open-air cinema here in the heart of Skala Eressos. Come and join us for a magical evening beneath a sapphic, star-lit sky.
There will be a special Q&A session with Tzeli post screening “Lesvia” delves into the heart of Skala Eressos, a village on the southwestern coast of Lesvos Island, forever marked by the legacy of Sappho, the pioneering poet who dared to celebrate love between women.
Long isolated, Skala Eressos witnessed a remarkable transformation in the mid-1970s. Inspired by Sappho’s spirit, women from around the globe began to arrive, seeking connection and a refuge from societal prejudice.
Tzeli Hadjidimitriou, a lesbian native of Lesvos, captures this pivotal moment in history. Through interviews with both the local inhabitants and the visiting women, the film explores the evolving dynamics that saw Eressos transform into a thriving lesbian community.
“Lesvia” is a testament to the power of storytelling. Archival footage and photographs offer a glimpse into the village’s past, while present-day filming paints a vibrant portrait of the vibrant lesbian community that thrives there today.
Personal testimonies add a powerful layer of intimacy, allowing viewers to connect with the experiences of those who shaped Eressos’ unique character. Intertwined with these voices is Tzeli’s own narrative, offering a poignant perspective on her personal journey and the village she calls home.
