Tunde Hidvegi Bio

Tunde Hidvegi, a native of Hungary, creates resin art and unique jewellery, which she calls wearable art, with found objects from all around the world. She calls the process up-cycling, rather than recycling. Up-cycling is a process whereby one takes old objects and recycles them into something of more value than their original worth. By creating two-dimensional surface designs and adding elements of relief sculpture to finish off each composition, somehow she arranges each quirky objects so naturally that things like watches, pearls, old china, wood and doll body–parts look as though they were made this way originally.

Tunde has been doing mixed media art for over 25 years, and now her work can be seen at U.S. galleries, as well as in buildings, churches and in private homes in Virginia, USA and Europe. Although her degree is in music, she has always been connected to the visual arts. She started creating art after her child was born. She collected bits of ceramics, broken dishes, watches and odd objects anywhere she travelled and through her family and friends. Soon, these objects found their place in her mixed media art pieces. She would like to share her talents with people who are interested in this form of art, because she believes that by creating art, each person expresses his/her individuality and creativity. This must be nurtured and developed for personal fulfilment and also for the benefit of the greater community.

Resin

Resin is an epoxy substance. It consists of two parts, the resin and the hardener. The two parts are mixed together in a ratio of 1 to 1. After thorough mixing, the clear liquid is poured over art work such as collage, photographs, paintings, and mosaics. Depending on the temperature, the resin cures to touch in about 8 hours. The finished art piece is coated in a beautiful, glass-like, hardened epoxy.

Epoxy resin is used in various arts/crafts. Jewellers use it to make unique pieces of jewellery. Photographers use resin to enhance and protect their pictures. Mosaic artists sometimes substitute traditional grout for resin.

Skala Women’s Rock Club – Daily Swim @ Budda Bar
Sep 10 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am
Skala Women's Rock Club - Daily Swim @ Budda Bar

Skala Eressos is famous for many things… its beautiful beaches, its beachfront restaurant and its magical summer vibe. But one of its most special traditions for women is taking part in the daily Skala Women’s Rock Group.

It is approximately 400m from the nearest beach at Budda Bar to the rock. The swim is through the crystal clear Aegean Sea where the depth varies from walking depth to 10m.

The humble beginnings of Skala Women’s Rock Group were formed in the summer of 2010 where a small group of women started to swim to The Rock and back for exercise, and to meet afterwards for a coffee and a chat.

Last year 2500 swims were facilitated to the rock and back.

Every morning at 10.30am the swimmers for the day meet at Budda Bar and swim out to the rock and back. For some swimmers this is easy and enjoyable. For some it is a test of courage. For many it is an opportunity to overcome a personal fear, mark a turning point or set a personal milestone.

The swimmers are totally safe and are accompanied by kayaks. Over the  years Skala Women’s Rock Group has developed and grown and gained international status with women joining the swim from many parts of the world.

Come join us in this wonderful morning tradition every morning at 10.30am.

If you are new to the Festival this meeting point is a great way to connect, meet other women and find out what is on for the rest of the day. It’s not just a swim, it’s an institution.

Polichnitos Baths

The thermal springs of Lesvos have been well known since ancient times. They are regarded and used as valid therapeutic treatments for all kinds of ailments and are therefore prescribed by doctors. Mineral and thermal baths were evident in Greece around 500 B.C. The early Greek baths were built near natural hot springs or volcanoes. Greek celebrities and the elite would meet at these natural hot springs to exchange philosophical views and treat physical ailments. Plato considered anyone who did not know how to swim as uneducated. Hippocrates (460-375 BC), believed to be the founder of medicine, recommended hydrotherapy for the treatment of disorders such as jaundice and rheumatism.

How hot it is?

Water temperatures range between 67°C and 92°C. Bath temperatures range between 42°C and 44°C.

The baths and pools are housed in a series of low constructions on the right, built under tall eucalyptus trees. These are the old buildings, which have been operating for numerous years, that were renovated to fit modern needs and include both old and new water channels. The water springs free and steaming hot, and as a result of thermophilic animalcules (algae) growing in it, on its way down gives the floor a beautiful red color.

Can you get away with murder?! We are so excited about this new workshop, we know it will appeal to many a budding crime writer out there AND there’s chocolate and wine involved too…what’s not to love! How (not) To Kill Your Girlfriend

…. or how to kill your girlfriend and get away with it! Would it be in the kitchen with a cleaver or the bedroom with ….?

Can you come up with the perfect ‘Modus Operandi’ to get away with murder, that would thrill a crime fiction reader and foil a forensic psychologist?

In this fun workshop we will be hunting for the perfect MO for a crime plot. The best murderous methods will be rewarded with wine and chocolate but if you could be caught then it is off to jail for bread and water. Come prepared to laugh, act out the murder, apply your detective skills or play judge and jury!

Dr. Julie (Jules) Norris is a forensic psychologist with over 20 years experience working with law enforcement in Ireland, Europe and internationally with Interpol. She currently splits her time between consulting for a European law enforcement agency and embarking on her ‘bucket list’ desire of writing crime fiction in Skala Eressos . She can be tracked down most mornings swimming out to the rock!

McCHICKS 02

The McChicks at Flamingo!

Unique Amsterdam-based pop-trio the McChicks have been touring the world as musicians with some of the most renowned artists on the pop, jazz and theatre scene from the Netherlands.

They have each enjoyed huge success as solo artists; Rated as the drummer/singer most seen on television, Tessa Boomkamp regularly plays in the band of ‘The Voice’ in Holland; Phaedra Kwant was chosen as this year’s ‘Best Jazz/fusion bassist of the Benelux’; and Astrid Akse is considered by many to have one of the most funky guitar grooves imaginable.

In 2009 they got together as the McChicks and released their first album. Outstanding instrumentalists and fantastic vocalists, the McChicks bring an inspiring energy to their live performances – a stylish combination of their own wonderful compositions coupled with a few well chosen cover arrangements, all performed with their own exclusive sound. Soft and touching like angels or grooving and rocking like hell: it’s the McChicks! A real must-hear.

Daniela Horovitz - The Bitter Sweet, The Songs of Sappho

El Dulce Amargo, Canciones de Safo

The poetry of Sappho meets Latin American rhythms. A musical tribute to Women, love and beauty

Concept, music and performance by Daniela Horovitz. Artistic collaboration by Juan Parodi.

Daniela, who composed the original music also sings the poems of ‘Sappho de Lesbos’ accompanied by her guitar, lyre and piano. She alternates music, singing and poetry on a contemporary style in her effort to convey the same feeling of the verses that were sang by the Greek poet around 2600 years ago.

Sappho, an unmatched poet, was the first woman to sing her more intimate emotions in a direct and profound way, without unnecessary solemnity. This made her work contemporary and universal. The bittersweet travels from the songs and the theatrical release thru opposite emotions:

The passion, the ire, jealousy, the nature, the friendship, the devotion, and love as Sappho conceived it: Personal and intimate.

The bittersweet, Gluku-pikron in Greek, is a word Sappho coined to portrait the double edge of love. “I was looking for you and arrived, and have refreshed my soul that was burning of your absence” Sappho de Lesbos.

Skala Women’s Rock Club – Daily Swim @ Budda Bar
Sep 17 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am

Key Change – Open Clasp Theatre Company @ Cine Sappho Magicnights
Sep 17 @ 9:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Key Change Lesvos Theatre

Key Change by Open Clasp Theatre Company

We are delighted to announce that the award winning play ‘Key Change’ performed by the Open Clasp Theatre Company will be screened on Sunday 16th September at the open-air cinema.

Key Change is an all-female prison drama from Newcastle’s Open Clasp Theatre Company. It’s devised by female prisoners in HMP Low Newton and based on their real life experiences. Raw, powerful and funny, it’s an illuminating portrayal of the lives of women in a British prison and is a unique opportunity to hear their voices.

The UK has one of the highest rates of women’s imprisonment in Western Europe. Over 50% of women in prison report having suffered domestic abuse, one in three has suffered sexual abuse and nearly 40% leave prison homeless.

The production explores some of these issues, showing the personal stories behind the statistics. It was commissioned by Dilly Arts, an arts development company that specialises in working with people in prison. It’s been performed at women’s prisons, toured to the Edinburgh Fringe and New York, and played to policy makers at the UK Houses of Parliament.

Key Change has strong language and adult themes, including domestic violence, abuse and drug use.

Open Clasps’s award winning work is informed by the lived experiences of marginalised women, rooted in the belief that theatre changes lives. Catrina Hughes, Artistic Director and the writer of Key Change, describes the company’s productions as a “unique brand of hard hitting, thought provoking but very funny plays which highlight the women as survivors rather than victims and honour their talent, courage and strength.” Hughes recently received an MBE for services to disadvantaged women through theatre.

There will be a panel discussion after the film with Open Clasp’s artistic director and writer Catrina McHugh MBE.

All welcome

How (not) To Kill Your Girlfriend with Dr. Jules Norris! @ Skala Eressos Town Hall
Sep 18 @ 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Jules Norris

Can you get away with murder?! We are so excited about this new workshop, we know it will appeal to many a budding crime writer out there AND there’s chocolate and wine involved too…what’s not to love! There will be two workshops running for your delight on Tuesday 11th September 6-7.30pm and Tuesday 18th September 6-7.30pm venue Town Hall, Skala Eressos, Lesvos! Free for wristband holders. No need to sign up, just turn up. Sense of humour essential.

GRANNIES, 2017

documentary film, color, 27′

Making their own mark … Grannies presents four women of Lesvos: Aged but strong in spirit, grounded in the soil and history of the island, recalling life with humour and wisdom. Angeliki throws away the photos of those who have passed away, Myrsini sings a capella an Amanes song in the living room of her country house, a woman in the park caresses her cat, a substitute for her dead husband, and Photo proudly claims that she never cared about marriage, because she wanted to be free. The grannies ask for nothing except to be recognised as the heroes of their own lives.

IN SEARCH OF ORPHEUS, 2017

documentary film, color, 51:30'

The film In search of Orpheus follows, in a poetic way, the traces of the mythical musician in Lesvos, Greece, where, as legend has it, his head and his lyre were washed up on the shores of the island. As we wander around the area that is linked with the legend, we come across ordinary
people and ask them what they know about this subject. Their answers are staggering, as each one of them has modified the story according to  their own imagination and experiences. In other words, they each make up one more tale to the many tales about Orpheus.

Among these people, we encounter the famous Chinese lyric poetess Lanlan. For her, this place is always the cradle of ancient music and poetry. Her presence offers the film an unexpected yet very important dimension.

As the film was shot on coasts where refugees have been arriving for years, even before 2015, in the same places where – centuries before – the sea and the myth washed up Orpheus, the locals mention it very often.

Grannies and In Search of Orpheus, are both part of a series shot in Lesvos, during the financial and migrant crisis under the title Silent Path. The series is filmed with a poetic approach, without seeking the classic documentation. It deliberately follows the natural course of the meetings with the characters, without aiming at a pre-determined outcome, leaving space for emotions and the unexpected. The aim of the series is to give a voice to everyday people who live their lives quietly, but know how to share, laugh, create, love, endure and keep on going with dignity, preserving a way of living in harmony with their environment. This is the “intangible cultural heritage” of Greece of Europe, the culture of everyday life of ordinary people with knowledge, practices and traditions, that are often deeply rooted in time, and to this day still define our collective memory and identity.
